Genre Research: Action

The common camera angles in action:

  • Long shot: Artificially shortens the distance between two characters, tricking the viewer into thinking that the characters actually punch each other but the angle just makes it look like that.
  • Wide shot: Used to establish the main characters in the movie but not the area surrounding them.
  • Low angle: Used to show how intimidating the villain is and how they are above all.
  • High angle: Used to show when the main hero is in a tough situation and losing, usually fights or big battles.
  • Establishing shot: Used to show the main area where the heroes/hero battles it out.

Common Costumes, Props, Setting, and Make-up:

  • Costume: The costumes in action films are what truly establish the character, some people don't even know the characters face but as soon as they see the suit/costume they immediately recognize them.
  • Props: Props are important in action films, whether it range from Thor's Hammer to Batman's Bata-rang, the character's weapons are what define their actions. Thor's Hammer is a symbol of hope, which is even proven in Norse mythology, while Batman's Bata-rang invokes fear, connected to his fear of bats.
  • Make-up: Make-up is what models the character's we see, changing their facial expressions and what they look like also.

Common editing techniques:

  • Jump Cuts: Used when characters travel to new locations, without the need to use a source of transportation.
  • Reverse Shot: switch between characters during a conversation.
  • Common Sound Techniques: Score: The score of these types of films are mostly used to set up the mood of the atmosphere.
  • Sound Effects: they are used to make stuff sound more realistic, more loud and vivid.
  • Voiceover: it helps explain what the character thinks of in the current situation they are in.
  • Dialogue: represents the conversation between characters.

Examples of Films:

  • Avengers Endgame
  • Nobody
  • Fast and Furious 9

  • The elements that caught my attention and would be suitable for our pitch would be the sound techniques, consisting of voiceover and dialogue to give plot to the story. I also would like to see most of the camera angles be used in the final task since they would help represent the action and environment of the film.
