Comparing 9, the short, and 9, the full-length movie
The first short film to analyze, is 9 by Shane Acker. The film is about a rag doll who lives in a miniature junkyard. In the beginning of the film, the main character is working with a friend to get a lightbulb to work. While doing this, a monster is shown to be working in the shadows. The main characters friend notices and tells the main character to run as they stay behind to fight off the beast. The main character turns around to watch their friend, get easily overpowered and killed by the monster. This monster then turns its attention to the main character, chasing it until the main character can get out of sight for a few seconds. At this point, the main character devise is a trap to jump on top of the monster, which does not work out. By the end of the film, the main character is backed up on a ledge, while the monster creeps towards it. In this moment, the main character jumps, causing the balance of the plank to shift, sending the monster into a long fall. At the end, the main character uses some sort of device that projects his friends that passed. The character developed from someone week, who took orders from a friend to someone who was able to slay the monster that everyone feared. The film was made by stop motion, animation, giving it a less than lifelike appearance. In the film, he uses, purely diegetic sound with no dialogue and no non-diegetic sound. This creates a more tense atmosphere, along with the cross cuts that disoriented the viewer. One thing that the full length film offers is a backstory to how the rag dolls came to be. The full film also allows time for dialogue which could not be fit into the short film. Overall, the full length film adds much filler details as opposed to the short film. I enjoyed the short film more because it condensed all the main events of the full length film into a matter of minutes. I think that creating suspense and hooking your audience in is the most important lesson to be learned from these films, and will be incorporated into my groups own film.
